It's actually more conditioning. We use the ancient "come boss" call... it can be pretty funny to watch their heads come up in a distant field, and then the entire herd starts trotting towards us and the barn.
Of course, if the weather is perfect and they've got plenty of fresh grazing, you can call until you're hoarse... that's when the Border Collie is worth his weight in gold!
