Here's another example of frail/ claw hammer.

Note, no resonator on her banjo. Classic bluegrass/mountain style

Here's an example of the Scruggs style of banjo playing. Started in the 50's by Earl Scruggs, this style took off. It's played with finger picks and the banjos usually have a resonator to boost the sound. Bluegrass purists eschew this as a form of amplification, but popular has a quality all its own. This is the style I try to play, but am looking at going back in history to the frail and claw hammer styles.

Why, I remember a beautiful early evening this fall as the sun was just setting and my neighbor came over and said, "Why don't you play your banjo, Groucho?" "What's the matter," I asked, "don't you like the air horn?"

Had a friend when I was in the Army and stationed at Hood, that picked a 12 string guitar, 3 finger style, and he was awesome.
