Trump endorses Romney for Utah Senate seat

President Donald Trump endorsed Mitt Romney in the Utah Senate race on Monday evening, a surprise move that added another layer of intrigue to an already complex relationship between the two men.

Trump’s announcement on Twitter came three days after Romney launched his bid for the seat that longtime GOP Sen. Orrin Hatch is retiring from.

“.@MittRomney has announced he is running for the Senate from the wonderful State of Utah,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “He will make a great Senator and worthy successor to @OrrinHatch, and has my full support and endorsement!”

Romney, the 2012 GOP nominee, responded with a tweet of his own.

“Thank you Mr. President for the support,” he wrote. “I hope that over the course of the campaign I also earn the support and endorsement of the people of Utah.”

By endorsing Romney, the president is lining up behind an all-but-certain winner. Romney is likely to have only marginal opposition during his campaign.

Trump and Romney have long had a tense relationship. During the 2016 presidential race, Romney emerged as the de-facto leader of the “Never Trump” movement, deriding then-candidate Trump as a “phony” and imploring the party to nominate someone else. Trump hit back, labeling Romney a “stone-cold loser.”

The friction eased after the 2016 election, when Trump considered Romney to be his secretary of state.

But over the course of the next year, Romney demonstrated a willingness to criticize the president, including over his handling of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. Trump, meanwhile, led an ultimately unsuccessful campaign to convince Hatch to run for reelection — an effort partly aimed at keeping Romney from seeking the seat.

After Hatch announced his retirement in January, Trump phoned Romney and wished him the best of luck, though he did not commit to supporting him.

Romney’s decision to run for Senate has led to widespread speculation about his future, and whether he may use his new perch to be a thorn in the president’s side. But, for now, those close to Romney say he is intent on running a Utah-focused campaign and largely staying mum about Trump.

That does not mean he will ignore him completely, however.

In his announcement video, Romney delivered what many considered to be an indirect jab at the president.

"Utah welcomes legal immigrants from around the world,” he said. “Washington sends immigrants a message of exclusion."

AS was posted in the thread concerning the bumpstock ban, an auto sear will do the same thing. For those who do not know, an auto sear is a piece of metal no bigger than your thumb and thin, that fits in the right place in the lower of an AR. It makes it go fast. I have heard that people make them from thin sheets of metal fairly easily. So the loss of the bumpstock is a move against a unique piece of equipment that I think costs about $300. A fun toy, when toys are the point. If the need for speed ever arises on a national level, the bumpstock will not be missed. Mute point to a degree.

Romney, yah he's a globalist. Trump is playing his cards as the article suggests.
