On a scale of one to ten, last night Trump was a seven and Pelosi/Schumer were a zero

    By Thomas Lifson

I thought that President Trump’s first Oval Office address last night was very good, but not a home run. (Transcript here, video embedded below.) But compared to the disastrous response from Democrat leaders Pelosi and Schumer, it was a grand slam.

On substance, the president was a nine on a scale of one to ten, nearly perfect. His focus was on the practical issues right away: the lack of facilities to handle the families that have come to predominate the flow, and the vast quantities of drugs that come into the country. The humanitarian crisis is undeniable, and the Democrat/Media complex have already done plenty to bring home the suffering caused by the attractive nuisance of a border that is perceived as porous. The Democrats’ habit of emoting over the human tragedies at the border was converted into a support for the notion of a crisis, in a neat bit of political jujitsu.
But on style (which is how most people react to a speech – consider how Obama was considered a “great orator” for speeches full of platitudes), he was a five, yielding a combined rating of seven. The president was clearly reading a teleprompter and was not as fluid as he can be when in front of an audience. I did not perceive a heart-and-soul connection to the public the way that President Reagan could handle an Oval Office address. To be fair, speaking into a camera with no audience and very high stakes is a huge challenge. A rating of five is “average,” and that’s what I thought his style was.
The contrast provided by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer was dramatic. The substance was mediocre at best, and the style went into negative point territory. They obviously did not get any help in staging from their friends in Hollywood. It was a disaster. (Transcript here, video embedded below.) Let’s start with the podium that was too narrow to accommodate both of them. It was clown car territory.

The Shining also came up a lot:

On substance, the two Democrats mouthed familiar talking points on the border: the transparen’t lie that Democrats are all for border security but just not walls. But their main focus was the 25% shutdown, which matters much more to federal bureaucrats than to the general public.
One thing that has got worry the Democrats for the next two years is that their two leaders are dreadful as persuaders. Just awful. And, until they have their presidential nominee, the next highest pubic profile as spokesman is that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is a walking, talking exemplar of an ignorant know-it-all.
I give Pelosi-Schumer a two on substance and a negative two on style, with a net rating of zero.
President Trump likes winning, an last night he won.
    Update:
NBC News sent out a tweet with a revealing picture of Pelosi and Schumer watching themselves after the speech, and it is clear that Schumer knows he and Nancy were a disaster:

I was most uncomfortable watching the response. Those two “people” appeared drugged, almost zombie like, and entirely bizarre.

I thought Trump could have laid out a few more facts to enhance his argument. Did not watch the clown show. MSM does all the heavy lifting for the Dems. ABC was as bad as CNN on their nightly news. The overall message was Trump can't be trusted because there is no proof that 4,000 terrorists came across the border last year. They even got so desperate as to have one of their reporters try to convince us that the Canadian border is where we need to beef up security, not the Mexican border!! What are they drinking?

    From http://fortune.com/2019/01/07/4000-s...orts-customs/:

U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountered only six immigrants on the U.S.-Mexico border whose names were in a federal database of known or suspected terrorists, contradicting earlier White House claims that nearly 4,000 suspected terrorists were stopped at the country’s southern border.
The disclosure, made by Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen Monday and first reported by NBC News, concerned only the first half of 2018. Of 41 people stopped at the U.S.-Mexico border by the CBP in that period, 35 were U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, with the other six classified as non-residents.

By contrast, the CBP encountered 91 people at the U.S.-Canada border whose names were on the federal list, with 41 of them non-U.S. citizens or residents, NBC said.

With all the heat on the southern border, if I were trying to walk in illegally, I'd probably try the Canadian side, too.

What you say ... in my opinion ... was two people who are entirely uncomfortable having to answer to the mensch for their actions and all too accustomed to having the media heads, who are better polished actors and liars, do their selling for them.

They'd much rather dispose of this farce of a democracy and get on with the business of being overlords.

The average voter doesn't want tons of facts. It's about emotions. He was aiming to hit peoples emotions with fear and the promise of a solid caring father figure who was there to protect them.

It also allowed the leftists to come across as uncaring jerks.

    Win-win.

The speech was a tactic to get through to low information voters. Not the entire effort.

I stand corrected, Little Fish! I was basing my judgement on a piece I read a year or so ago that showed evidence of terrorists crossing the southern border but not apprehended.
