6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes off Oregon Coast

    Aug 29, 2019

Coos Bay, ORE. - Just after 8 this morning, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Oregon, according to the USGS.

According to the USGS website, there were more than 350 reports of people feeling shaking from the coast, inland to Eugene, even all the way inland to Bend. Plus, there are reports of shaking as far north as Seattle.

The reason so many people felt the shaking is because this was a shallow earthquake, only 3.3 miles deep, according to KEZI 9 News Meteorologist Andrew Shipotofsky.

The earthquake struck 178 miles off the coast of Coos Bay, USGS reported... "

My earthquake alarm went off, but we are too far away to feel anything. That is always an interesting moment when the alarm goes off and we wait to see if it is the big one.

    What's an earthquake alarm?

We get small quakes pretty much weekly. According to the website, we've had 117 in the past 7 days, 17 in the past 24 hours. I haven't felt any of them. Usually it's got to be a 3 at least before I can distinguish it between a truck passing on the road or the kids being rowdy.

My house did survive the big one last year though. A 6+ one that had us all rocking and rolling while the volcano was erupting.

Earthquake alarms detect the P wave that precedes the more energetic and damaging S wave of an earthquake. It gives you a warning of maybe 5-10 seconds, so you can hopefully move to a safer location. Ours false alarms about three times as often as it detects an earthquake but that isn't so much that we don't pay attention to it.
