Wisconsin’s Dairy Crisis: “We Are Losing Two Farms A DAY!”

Wisconsin’s dairy crisis has only just begun as the state is losing two farms each day, according to Patty Edelburg, vice president of the National Farmers Union. As farm bankruptcies soar, it is possible that nearly 10% of Wisconsin dairy farmers may go out of business in 2019.
“You look at the weather, you look at the crops you can’t get off the field, you look at the bills you can’t pay,” Edelburg, told Yahoo Finance. “Bankruptcies are up. Wisconsin is attributed as the number one bankruptcy in the nation right now when it comes to dairy farmers. That number is up, I think, 24% from last year already. We’re losing two farms a day.” Between 2016 and 2018, Wisconsin lost almost 1,200 dairy farms. The USDA saw a 6.8% decrease in farms across the entire country in 2018.
Wisconsin’s suicide rates have spiked over the last few years and according to the Wisconsin State Journal, experts are attributing many of those deaths to farmers facing economic challenges.
“Farming is such a stressful occupation by itself,” Edelburg said. “When you start adding financial stress on top of it, it’s just going to add more stress. Farmers can’t pay their bills, they have no extra money, they have people honing down their neck looking to pay bills. They’re going to banks and they can’t get loans. They’re literally being denied loans.”
She explained that the USDA farm agency trains its farm loan officers on how to look for warning signs as part of suicide prevention. “The bankers are the first and the forefront to see a lot of these things,” Edelburg said. “They’re delivering the bad news, and these farmers are dealing with it on that level.”
It isn’t just farmers who are committing suicide either. The political structure in place, which is designed to steal from the producer and redistribute wealth to the government is widening the wealth gap, creating more poverty, and generally destroying the mental well being of so many Americans.

Ya well milk demand is way down maybe that is one of the reasons. They just can't sell their milk.
Now a huge daily company is even filling bankruptcy because of LOW demand for milk.
No. 1 milk company declares bankruptcy amid drop in demand

Got milk? Increasingly, Americans don't, and that led the nation's biggest milk producer to file for bankruptcy Tuesday.
Dean Foods blamed a decadeslong drop in milk consumption that has seen people turn to alternatives like soda, juice and almond milk.
The Dallas company said it may sell itself to the Dairy Farmers of America, a marketing cooperative owned by thousands of farmers.
"Despite our best efforts to make our business more agile and cost-efficient, we continue to be impacted by a challenging operating environment marked by continuing declines in consumer milk consumption," CEO Eric Berigause said in a statement.
Since 1975, the amount of liquid milk consumed per capita in the U.S. has tumbled more than 40%. Americans drank around 24 gallons a year in 1996, according to government data. That dropped to 17 gallons in 2018.

I'm in Wisconsin, and milk was $1.69/gallon at Aldi yesterday. No farmer can make a living at that kind of price.

I know that every evil under the sun is Trump's fault, but I don't think this problem can be laid at the President's feet.

The real problem is a free market does not exist for dairy farmers. It's been completely controlled by Washington for decades.

Milk at the Walmart is 99c a gallon. Local dairies are closing up shop.
Beef sales is just as awful. A young healthy solid 1000# bull sold the other day at 55c a lb.
Nobody can raise cattle at those prices and pay the input costs.

I don’t see how it can continue.

Padre, I just like the sound of MAGA, kinda catchy ... and in the grande scheme, meaningless.

The policies that have brought our society to the deathbed have been imposed, as you mentioned, decades ago, and refined as wee peepses attempted to adapt, negotiate.

Politicians, all politicians, publicly express concerns on general topics that seem a priority to wee peepses and promise to take steps to provide relief once they're head of the institutions that created the problems to begin with.

"Murikan peepses can't compete with taxpayer subsidized, "too big to fail" conglomerated corporations who exist thanks to goobermint regulators ....

I wasn't putting this on the trumpster but his "maga" bullshit is just that.
