Been looking into Night Vision Goggles and monoculars the last couple days and couldn't find anything via the search field.
Anybody have experiences they wouldn't mind sharing?
Particularly interested in the quality (or lack thereof) from discount sites like nightvision4less.com that sell B grade.
I figure something is better than nothing, but is it really?

We had some discussion on this subject in the SSFK. When Gab starts behaving again, I'll copy/paste my thoughts on the matter to this thread.
Short version for now though, is that decent gen 2+ units start at $2k, and decent gen3 units start at around $3k. The best monocular money can buy is about $4k. Gen 2 and below, and "digital" night vision is simply not worth having.

I second HouseWolf. I have only dealt with jrh enterprises. I wouldn't recommend anything less than 1600FOM and prefer 1900FOM. Both of these units he carries are 25.1SNL I believe. I also recommend getting a quality tube. I like a white tube but green works just fine for me. With that said I have 20/20 vision with no other eye problems.

Top notch build quality, and the tube looks just as good as the pictures do.
I know Japabilly was contemplating the purchase of a $2000 gen 2+ unit, I don't know if he ever went through with it. He said he'd do a review if he got one though. They seem to actually be pretty decent, but I'd still recommend coughing up the extra 2k for a top of the line tube.

I can solve your cold weather issue. Use Energizer L91 AA lithium batteries. They are not meaningfully affected by cold temperatures at the current draw of a typical PVS-14 until it gets below -30°C. Here's a spec sheet:

Yeah, the lithium are the way to go. I’m still using the same battery with the one I bought last year and it’s had 15-20 hours use. I don’t use the illuminator at all, or almost ever.
The first one I bought is about 5 or 6 years old now, still works like new, and has eaten up a few batteries over time. By the way, NEVER leave the batts in your device when not in use. That's the best way to ruin it.
Anyway NV is actually really useful here. We're in the country so there is little to no ambient light.
When our Pyrenees had her first pups it was December, and I would use it to check on them at night.
Not to mention keeping an eye on predators.
It you get a PVS system be sure to use it. The perspective issues are a challenge at first, but with some time you become accustomed to it.
There is no other way to gain that other than actual use.

If you feel the need to have them then don't try to budget ... nothing less than a gen2.
How do you plan to employ your system?
Good neighbor Bob would recommend gen3 pvs7, weapon mounted Steiner Dbal3.
You can't shoot, eat or heat directly with $$$$ ... later, few will accept any for anything of true value.
Once you've acquired what you believe you want / need, get out and use your system ... the darkness it's an entirely different world and you need to identify deficiencies now.
Good neighbor Bob says that he's heard good things from end users on white phospor tubes, two reliable techs lean heavy to green.
