Default Forged election documents in Michigan and Arizona

The most disturbing fact about the GOP's burgeoning fake electors scandal

As Trump's team pushed its discredited voter fraud narrative, the National Archives received forged certificates of ascertainment declaring him and then-Vice President Mike Pence the winners of both Michigan and Arizona and their electors after the 2020 election. Public records requests show the secretaries of state for those states sent those certificates to the Jan. 6 panel, along with correspondence between the National Archives and state officials about the documents.

Spokespeople for the Michigan and Arizona secretaries of state declined to comment on the documents. The offices confirmed that Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, both Democrats, and their staff met with the panel in November.

“They mostly discussed election administration in Arizona, the 2020 elections, threats/harassment directed toward the office, and the Cyber Ninja’s partisan ballot review,” said Hobbs' spokesperson C. Murphy Hebert.

Benson and her staff took questions from the committee on the 2020 election and events leading up to the Jan. 6 riot, according to Tracy Wimmer, a spokesperson for Benson.

The National Archives sent emails to the Arizona secretary of state on Dec. 11, 2020, passing along the forged certificates “for your awareness” and informing the state officials the Archives would not accept them.

Arizona then took legal action against at least one of the groups who sent in the fake documents, sending a cease and desist letter to a pro-Trump "sovereign citizen" group telling them to stop using the state seal and referring the matter to the state attorney general.

“By affixing the state seal to documents containing false and misleading information about the results of Arizona’s November 3, 2020 General Election, you undermine the confidence in our democratic institutions,” Hobbs wrote to one of the pro-Trump groups.

That group’s leader, Lori Osiecki, had told the Arizona Republic in December 2020 that she decided to send in the certificates after taking part in post-election rallies and after attending a daylong meeting in Phoenix that had included Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani.

The group that forged the Michigan certification had not used the state seal, and it appears state officials there took no further action after the Archives rejected it.

Fake electoral documents under new scrutiny as Trump prepares for Arizona visit

As former President Donald Trump prepares for a visit to Arizona, there has been renewed scrutiny of fake electoral vote certificates sent by Trump supporters in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

Trump was originally set to hold a press conference on the first anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, but said he would instead address the election and the riot at the Jan. 15 rally in Florence, Ariz. He has continued to baselessly claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him, with some prominent Arizona Republicans pushing the same conspiracy theory.

While Republican Gov. Doug Ducey certified the election with Joe Biden as its winner in December 2020, other members of the party, including Kelli Ward, chairwoman of the Arizona Republican Party, pushed a fake electoral certificate stating that Trump had won the state. The document was sent to the National Archives, which processes Electoral College certificates before sending them on to Congress.

The Arizona GOP’s official social media accounts promoted its false document and those of other states with a tweeted video captioned “The signing” on Dec. 14 and a YouTube video posted the following day in which Ward said that the “true electors for the presidency” had met the previous day to cast their votes.

“Congress is adjourned,” she tweeted a few weeks later as pro-Trump rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 in an attempt to block certification of the election. “Send the elector choice back to the legislatures.”

In addition to Arizona, fake electoral certificates were sent by Trump supporters in Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The certificates were published by the watchdog group American Oversight last March, and began circulating again this week after reporting from MSNBC and Politico, as the House committee looking into the events of Jan. 6 continues its investigation into how much state-level efforts to subvert the election were coordinated.

One of the 11 Republicans who signed the Arizona document was Jake Hoffman, who had just won a state Legislature race. While Hoffman was running for the seat in 2020, he was banned from Twitterand the marketing firm he ran was banned from Facebook for participating in what was referred to as a pro-Trump “troll farm” where teenagers posted in favor of Trump and promoted conspiracy theories about the election and the coronavirus. The effort was reportedly affiliated with Turning Point USA, a major conservative youth organization based in Arizona.

With the documents receiving renewed scrutiny this week, Arizona NBC affiliate KPNX asked Hoffman on Wednesday about signing Arizona’s certificate.

“So in unprecedented times, unprecedented action is ... there is no case law, there is no precedent that exists as to whether or not an election that is currently being litigated in the courts has due standing,” Hoffman said. “Which is why we felt it appropriate to provide Congress and the vice president with dueling opinions.”

A second group, identifying itself as “The Sovereign Citizens of the Great State of Arizona,” also sent a slate of fake electoral votes to the National Archives, prompting a cease-and-desist letter from the office of Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs for its use of the official Arizona seal.

Arizona has been ground zero for election-related conspiracies, with a partisan “audit” of the vote in populous Maricopa County dividing Republicans in the state. At an October hearing in the U.S. House on the much-maligned Maricopa ballot inquiry, Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., refused to say Biden had won the election.

The belief that Biden is not a legitimate president is now mainstream among most Republicans, as aYahoo News/YouGov poll released last week found that a vast majority of Trump voters (75 percent) falsely believe the election was “rigged and stolen,” while just 9 percent of them think Biden “won fair and square” — down from 13 percent last January.

Trump has endorsed candidates for the state’s top offices who have said the 2020 election wasn’t legitimate, including former television journalist Kari Lake for governor, who has said she wouldn’t have certified the 2020 election results. He has also thrown his support behind state legislator Mark Finchem — who attended the Jan. 6 rally at the Capitol — for Arizona secretary of state. Finchem has consistently pushed the notion that the election was stolen from Trump while supporting the Maricopa “audit.”

“The Maricopa County 2020 election cannot be allowed to stand. It must be decertified and set aside,” Finchem said at a Trump rally in Iowa in October.

Ward, Lake, Finchem and Biggs are all set to speakat Trump’s rally on Saturday.

"...discredited voter fraud narrative..." ? Of course it's discredited by the fraudsters! The evidence proving the steal continues to mount.

"Falsely believe". Wow. You really ought to get your news from other sources, Green Man.

I have to question the sanity of anyone who believes that Biden won that election fair and square.
We have a video proving election fraud. There was no broken water main. That entire election should have been tossed out. Everyone involved should be in jail.
Anyone who serving an elected office right now might be there because they were voted for and might be there at a fraud. You don't know. None of us do. We are no longer a republic.

Green Man, Hoppy and a few others on this forum just like to show their stupidity and undermine folks who have done the research and have original thoughts. The worst we can do is encourage them by engaging them in conversation or commenting on their posts. I realize ignoring them doesn't make them go away... but it's a start.

Sunflowerstation, I hope that you are not among the snowflakes. TToL is supposed to be a free discussion forum. TToL and snowflakery do not seem to me to have much in common.

I think that dmatic may be one that should be listening to a variety of sources.

It's unclear to me what it is about the posts above that I made that seem false to some other members. A lot of Republicans apparently believe that there were some electoral shenanigans. Some Trump "electors" did in fact present themselves as being the legitimate ones in spite of being from states where Biden had beaten Trump in the popular vote. Is there something there that Lone Wolf or dmatic still contest?

Confirmation bias is a mental disorder, indeed. And arrogance is a learning disability, but, I still have some hope that they will come around.
