Default Magic Wand test in coming days

The IDF is gearing for a critical test of the Magic Wand system, which has been designed to intercepted short-to-medium range missiles in the backdrop of the Iron Dome's success during Operation Pillar of Defense, The Boston Globe reported Saturday. Israel has yet to confirm or deny the report.

According to the newspaper, the test is set to take place in the Negev in the coming days. Magic Wand, also known as David's Sling, is being developed by Israeli and American engineers at Rafael and Raytheon Co.

Israel is counting on the system to become the centerpiece of its air defense layout and provide a solution for a variety of short-range ballistic missiles, large caliber rockets and cruise missiles.

“They are working hard to get David’s Sling operational,” said a Raytheon official who was not authorized to speak publicly about the project or the upcoming test in Israel. “The hope is it will be able to knock out a variety of targets.”

In May 2011, Israeli defense officials estimated that Magic Wand will become operational in late 2012.

Israel is also working with Boeing on a more sophisticated system known as Arrow 3, designed to intercept missiles that can travel hundreds, even thousands of miles.

Clashes between protesters, riot police continue in Cairo as reformist warns of turmoil

CAIRO – Hundreds of protesters clashed with police in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Sunday, marking the third day of violence sparked by Egyptian President President Mohammed Morsi's decision to grant himself extensive new powers.

Riot police used tear gas as protesters hurled rocks toward them in the center of the square, where tents were erected on Friday as part of a sit-in demonstration organized by various Egyptian political groups, according to a Reuters report.

Prominent Egyptian democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei warned Saturday of increasing turmoil that could potentially lead to the military stepping in unless the Islamist president rescinds his new, near absolute powers, as the country's long fragmented opposition sought to unite and rally new protests.

Egypt's liberal and secular forces -- long divided, weakened and uncertain amid the rise of Islamist parties to power -- are seeking to rally themselves in response to the decrees issued this week by Morsi. The president granted himself sweeping powers to "protect the revolution" and made himself immune to judicial oversight.

Default Egypt's stock market plummets after Morsi's decree

CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt's benchmark stock index has plunged 9.5 percent halfway through the first trading session since the country's Islamist president issued decrees to assume near absolute powers.

Sunday's losses on the Egyptian Exchange's EGX30 index are among the biggest since the turbulent days and weeks after the ouster of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak last year.

The fall follows the announcement Thursday by President Mohammed Morsi of a package of decrees that place him above any oversight, including judicial, and extend the same protection to two Islamist-dominated bodies: a panel drafting a new constitution and parliament's upper chamber.

Morsi says his measures are designed to "protect the revolution," but they triggered an uproar among non-Islamist political groups now vowing to press on with street protests to force him to back down.

I wonder what all the loons are saying now? The loons who thought Morsi was the greatest thing since sliced bread...the man who would bring "democracy" to Egypt...the brilliant strategist who brokered a peace deal and kept Israel from a ground offensive.

How's that democracy working out for ya?????

Nov 25 (Reuters) - The Egyptian presidency said on Sunday it was committed to engaging "all political forces" to reach common ground on the constitution and stressed the "temporary nature" of a decree expanding President Mohamed Mursi's powers.

"This declaration is deemed necessary in order to hold accountable those responsible for the corruption as well as other crimes during the previous regime and the transitional period," the presidency said in a statement.

Default Syrian rebels capture air base near Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) -- Activists say Syrian rebels have captured a helicopter base near the capital Damascus.

The director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdul-Rahman, says rebels seized control of the Marj al-Sultan base on the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday morning.

He says at least 15 rebels and eight soldiers were killed in the fighting that started a day earlier.

Abdul-Rahman and Damascus-based activist Maath al-Shami say rebels destroyed two helicopters with rocket propelled grenades and captured a tank. They say the base houses several radars.

Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011 with an uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts. It quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.

Default Israel may strike at ship allegedly carrying Iranian rockets to Gaza – report

Israel has reportedly vowed to destroy rockets and other weapons being sent to Gaza by Iran. Tel Aviv issued this threat despite a recent ceasefire following eight days of bitter conflict between Gaza and Israel.

Israeli spy satellites spotted a cargo vessel in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas that was allegedly Gaza-bound and carrying arms, the Sunday Times reported.

“Regardless of the ceasefire agreement, we will attack and destroy any shipment of arms to Gaza once we have spotted it,” an Israeli defense official told the newspaper.

The vessel reportedly began its voyage last week just as Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire ending eight days of violence in Gaza, in which over 150 Palestinians died. The cargo is believed to include Fajr-5 rockets, similar to those used by Hamas in the conflict, and Shahab-3 ballistic missiles.

The ship is set to travel through the Red Sea, Sudan and Egypt, according to the Sunday Times report. The newspaper also cited Israeli officials speculating that Iran could be moving longer-range ballistic missiles into Sudan, which could be aimed at Israel from the African country.

The Sunday Times’ report comes a day after the Hamas leadership announced they aren’t ready to stop arming themselves, despite the recently-agreed truce and ceasefire.

"We have no choice but to continue to bring in weapons by all possible means," senior Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar told reporters, adding that he expected Tehran would "increase its military and financial support to Hamas."

Earlier on Wednesday, exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal thanked Shia-majority Iran for what he described as arms and funding.

On Saturday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad expressed support for Gaza in the bloody conflict, praising what he called Palestinian "resistance and perseverance" against Israel, which he said must now "bow" to Palestinian rights, IRNA news agency reported.

The eight-day Israeli assault on Gaza killed 168 Palestinians, mostly civilians. It also led to $300 million in economic damage, a Palestinian Chamber of Commerce report said.

Hamas fired Fajr-5 rockets against Israel, an unsettling revelation for the Israeli public. The country was last targeted by the 3-meter-long missiles during its 2006 war with Lebanon, and was expecting smaller-range rockets to be used in the recent conflict.

Hamas' Farj-5 arsenal was able to strike Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, cities that were not attacked during the previous escalation of violence between Israel and Gaza in 2008. The IDF was forced to rapidly deploy an additional battery of its Iron Dome air defense system to counter the threat.
